After working on his newest project for four years, Chris Burden unveiled “Metropolis II” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in early 2012. This 20′x30′ installation comprises 18 roadways, several train tracks, and various buildings constructed from Erector Sets, LEGO bricks, and Lincoln Logs. A pair of motorized conveyor belts generate all the potential energy to power the 1,100 custom-made cars (regular Hot Wheels proved too fragile), which travel around at a scale speed of 230mph. The result is an amazing frenetic energy that captures the rush of modern commuting in a big-city environment.

The dynamic sculpture has reportedly been sold for millions of dollars but will remain on display at LACMA for the next 10 years. Currently, “Metropolis II” may only be viewed during select 90 minute sessions, Fridays through Sundays.

Mom flew in from Washington for the weekend to celebrate her birthday. We started off her trip with a visit to LACMA. In addition to viewing the permanent collections, there were some excellent temporary exhibits on display, including Chris Burden’s newest installation Metropolis II, Ellsworth Kelly’s prints and paintings, Robert Adam’s photographs, and a member’s-only showing of works tied to Quetzalcoatl’s rule. We ended our visit with a wonderful lunch at Ray’s.

A beautiful March morning in Southern California had us heading down to Wood’s Cove in Laguna Beach. This was our first time diving this site, and it did not disappoint. Lush kelp, rich reef structure, and tons of fish made exploring here extremely enjoyable.

We joined SCAQ. Jennifer swam in high school, but hadn’t done structured swim sessions since then. Christopher isn’t nearly as good a swimmer, so had to get some new fins to help him keep up with his wife.

We needed a vacation, so decided to head up the coast for a long weekend. We spent Saturday in Shell Beach at The Cliffs Resort. After checking in, we went for a nice 25 mile bike ride around San Luis Obispo, then relaxed in the jacuzzi, before heading to dinner.

Sunday morning had us out for an early morning 11 mile run, then off to a delicious buffet brunch. We spent the rest of the day slowly working our way down the coast, stopping at various spots to enjoy the coastal views (and watching for sea otters). Late that afternoon we checked into our hotel in Carpinteria, before heading out for a lovely sushi dinner.

Monday morning was spent on a pleasant 15 mile bike ride (and very wobbly short run immediately afterward), followed by coffee and pastries. We next made our way down to the Carpinteria Seal Sanctuary (where the seals were out nursing newborns). Afterward, it was back to Santa Barbara for an afternoon at the Presidio, lunch at Sojourner Cafe, and a stroll on State Street, before finally making the short drive back to Los Angeles.

Diving oil rig Eureka, which sits in 700′ of water outside San Pedro, CA, we chanced upon several juvenile mola molas (ocean sunfish). Adult molas are the heaviest known bony fish in the sea.

Dad and Dulce invited us to spend Super Bowl Sunday with them at The Getty, along with Gary and Caroline. Our visit ended with lunch at the Getty restaurant, then a nice stroll through the garden.
