We spent Memorial Day hiking up to the top of Mount Baldy (formally Mount San Antonio), the highest point in LA County. We started off from Manker Flat Campground at 6,000′ elevation, made a quick stop at San Antonio Falls, and hiked up to Top of the Notch Restaurant where we enjoyed a breakfast buffet. Then we continued west up Devil’s Backbone Trail to the summit at 10,064′. We chose the perfect day, as the skies were clear and the weather was mild. On the hike down along Ski Hut Trail, we came across a group attempting to get a rattlesnake off the path. Over the six hours, we covered 11.2 miles and just over 4,000′ of elevation gain. Fun way to spend the day and make use of our recent REI purchases (love the trekking poles and the Garmin GPS).
