On Friday morning, we began the drive out east toward Palm Springs in a downpour. We were coming to the desert for a pair of races: the 102-mile Tour de Palm Springs on Saturday and the 13.1-mile Palm Springs Half Marathon on Sunday. Wet weather would not be to our liking. Thankfully, just as we hit the city outskirts, the skies cleared and basically remained that way through the rest of our stay.

As we did on our last Palm Springs vacation, we once again stayed at the Del Marco’s Hotel (we even got the same Jonny Costa room we liked so much!). This was perfect as not only is the hotel wonderful, but it meant we had only a short ride to the start of the cycling race and a very short drive to the start of the run race. The hotel is also just one block off the main Palm Springs strip of restaurants, so we could walk to dinner each night. We enjoyed some nice carb-loading meals at Kalura Trattoria Italiana and Zini Cafe Mediterrano, and a final post-activities celebratory breakfast at Cheeky’s after the half marathon.

The races were a huge success and a lot of fun. Really considering doing both again next year.
