Jennifer’s first Olympic distance triathlon was the San Diego Classic. The morning of, Chris drove me from Chula Vista to the race site at Liberty Station. The swim was in the boat channel, where it was pretty calm. Sun was rising as we swam and I could see airplanes flying overhead from the airport. The bike portion was probably the part I was most anxious about because of the infamous hill at Naval Base Point Loma. Of course the good news about having an uphill section on a loop ride is that there’s a nice downhill as well. The bike portion ended up being surprisingly nice. The run that followed was slower than I was hoping. After over two hours of activity, the two run loops were physically and mentally tough. At the end of it all, I managed to finish second in my age group (picking up a nice little trophy) and celebrated with some pizza and refreshments afterward. Best part of the whole event was seeing Chris along the route cheering me on.
